I did a Fedora Core 5 install at work today - for those of you using non-Free drivers (eg, nVidia or ATI), I'd strongly recommend you wait until those issues have been sorted out. Hacking in the driver support (alas, a customer demanded it work _today_) was not exactly a fun experience.
The issue has two aspects: 1. The shipping kernel accidentally labeled the spinlock function as "GPL'd only". You can't load up any non-Free module. This will get fixed in a kernel update, but it doesn't seem to be out yet. 2. The nVidia and ATI drivers aren't X.org 7 friendly. Livna has some modules that get around this, but those depend on fixing part (1). On the positive side, the speed optimizations are obvious and noticeable, the new theme is beautiful and usable, and the entire distribution has really started establishing its own identity (nearly all references to Red Hat have been purged). It is definitely a step in the right direction. As usual, the Fedora Community and Red Hat have done a fantastic job. -- David Zakar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
