You won't get any crashes from a missing .la file.  .la is used by the
current braindead incarnations of libtool, pkg-config, and configure.
You'll probably have difficulty building stuff from source without it,
though.  Try asking google.  It's a text file, not a binary file, so you
should be more or less okay.
