Jinho,

I would check with Verizon and see if they have FiOS available in your area. FiOS (Fiber Optic Systems) is Verizon's rollout of FTTP (Fiber To The Premises). So, they come and install a fiber node with UPS batter backup where you live and put both your phone and internet on that fiber cable... in some areas, they also provide television programming.

FiOS costs less than Comcast and generally you get more. Where Comcast's base package is $39 for 6Mb/s down and 384Kb/s up, Verizon's base FiOS is $39 5Mb/s down and 2Mb/s UP. The big difference comes in at the next tier, where Comcast is $49 for 8Mb/s down and 768Kb/s up and Verizon is also $49, but for 15Mb/s down and 2Mb/s up.

Verizon also offers a ridiculous package (for most home users) cost $179 per month with 30Mb/s down and 5Mb/s up. No one really needs those sorts of speeds unless they are hosting services in their house, but these home packages block the ports for running standard in house mail and web servers... though for about $20 more, they do offer a "business package" that is 15Mb/s down and 2Mb/s up, static IPs and no ports blocked.

I hope that was both informative enough and not to over the top!

Good luck,

Joe

Hi, Guys:

I've been using Comcast for long time. It is ok, but during spring and
summer, there are many outage of service due to weather(?, my only guess).
So, i am thinking to switch to Verizon or other provider.
Can you give me some advice (i am in silver spring area)?

Thanks,
Jinho
