Couple of other things:
does hostname lookup work? try

host www.google.com

it should report a list of ip addresses associated with the hostname

also, try a different nameserver like OpenDNS's:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Neither will really fix the problem, but may help you narrow it down
and figure out what to google for.

Hi, Roman:

Thanks for your suggestgion!

I have static IP (**.umd.edu) and /etc/resolv.conf
search umd.edu
nameserver 128.8.74.2
nameserver 128.8.76.2

Netmask as 255.255.254.0
gateway is 129.124.2.1

These were working fine till yesterday w/ Fedora core3.

Thanks

Before getting into more complicated things like firewall
configurations, it seems more likely to me that it is just that
your DNS server configuration is incorrect.

Are you getting your IP address using dhcp or setting it manually?

Either way, I would check that your /etc/resolv.conf has the correct DNS
server
entries and that you can actually reach them.

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade my system w/ RHEL4.4 from Fedora 3.
Everything works great. But...

I can go out using number address, but not with domain name.

It is likely caused by some kind of host-firewall(??), but
not sure what to do now. I tried to stop 'iptables' but
does not help.

Thanks for your suggestions!
