I too like the 10-pixel button setup of xmms. Perhaps I just haven't looked
hard enough for the right configuration options, but all of the
non-xmms-derivative players that I've tried don't seem to have (or have a very
crappy) compact mode. All I really want is 5 buttons, a song title, the
ability to change the volume with my mouse scroll wheel, and a fast way to
bring up the big user interface. This can be done in 10 vertical pixels, so
I'd like it to be. I don't particularly care if the big user interface is ugly
... I wonder why more players don't support a skin-able compact mode even if
they don't support a skin-able big user interface.

So, I've been using audacious recently. Does anyone know of any
non-xmms-derived players that do have a decent compact mode? I like the added
capabilities of many of the other players I've seen. I just wish they didn't
take up so much of my screen real estate all the time.
