I just now played around with it and got it to work. I followed up with the work done here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=436035. I downloaded the required Thawte CA from http://www.thawte.com/roots/. I then configured NetworkManager as shown at http://zordon.student.umd.edu/~kevin/umd-secure.png. NetworkManager is flaky with my ipw3945, but I eventually got it to take. It then can switch between umd-secure and even umd-secure-fast easily :)
