On my home LAN we have Macs and Linux machines (actually also a Windows
machine, but it's not a priority here). We have some drives setup so
that any computer can mount over the network. Years ago I started using
Samba for this purpose (mainly because Windows compatibility WAS an
issue). I also have been running an FTP server to occasionally share a
few files with friends. Recently, I've used webDAV a bit and I'm
wondering, would this be a reasonable solution for these purposes?

It seems like webDAV is more suited to access over the Internet than
samba and will avoid the horrendous problems of using FTP with NAT on at
least one end of the connection. If webDAV would be a reasonable
replacement for samba for mounting drives on the LAN as well, that would
really simplify things (only one service to worry about instead of
two). So I'm curious for the opinion of those who may have more
experience, would webDAV work for this? Are there any big drawbacks?
Would it be much slower than samba over the LAN? Are there bigger
security risks (or trickier security issues) involved, because it
involves running an HTTP server? Is there another good solution I'm
overlooking, like NFS?

Thanks,

Nick
