I've fought with this a bit in the past.  If you could state the
specific issue you are facing, I might be able to help.  Are you talking
about automatically choosing an X driver at boot time?

BTW, nouveau is getting pretty good now, though it does not support some
of the newest cards.  I have been using it on my Dell Latitude D620
since December with no major problems.

You are totally at the mercy of the computer you plug the drive into.
It could have anything from a hardware keylogger to a modified BIOS that
claims to boot from your drive but in fact boots a hypervisor that
brings up your system in a VM and injects malware into it.  For this
reason, I prefer to carry a laptop.
