Thanks to everyone who responded.

The deal is that a friend of nearly 50 years' standing, who is one of the world's great experts on pianists who made recordings, has been compiling a database of same for several decades. He's now in assisted living and has asked me to get the database onto more modern media.

So that's how we got here.

Talking with him tonight reveals that there *may* be an up-to-date version on the hard drive of one of the computers in his condo. Of course, he hasn't been in the condo for several years, which means the computers haven't been powered up in that length of time. With a little luck I'll be able to remove the HD from his computer, connect it to mine via a USB adaptor, and copy the files that way. Keep your fingers crossed.

Old geezer that I am, I honestly hadn't thought of eBay. I do have a 3.25" USB floppy drive that Linux even occasionally recognizes. I wonder if there's a preferred brand of these? It certainly isn't as reliable as connecting a USB HD, which, in my experience so far, *always* works.

Even beyond my friend's database, I have quite a few 5.25" floppies I wouldn't mind moving to something modern. Most of them are programming libraries.

Thanks again for all the help and advice.
