Well, I'm the only person who lives here and this laptop isn't connected to the net, so I think the security risk is minimal.
You can reboot and modify the grub config to boot into a root chell and let you change the password. 1. When the GRUB menu shows on boot, press 'e'. 2. On the line that starts "linux" add "init=/bin/bash" to the end. 3. Once you get a shell, type "mount -o remount,rw /" 4. Use the passwd command to set the password. 5. Reboot.
Once I figured out how to get a GRUB menu, this was what worked for me. For some reason I couldn't boot from a DVD, even when I went into the BIOS setup and disabled booting from everything except the DVD drive. All the methods suggested involving sudo and su required passwords.
I certainly learned a lot about Linux! So there you have it. I don't know what I'd do without y'all. Thanks again.
