Hi guys,

firstly, let me introduce myself. My name is Bartosz Skowron (getxsick
on #umit). I've been participated at GSoC program since 2008. 2 times
for the Umit Project, once for the Python Software Foundation. Also in
the past, I was invited to be a mentor for Umit Project and probably I
will be a mentor this year. As you see, I have some experience with
the GSoC and I would like to give you some hints.

Firstly, don't be afraid. Seriously. If you think, the project is too
difficult for you, just ask Umit staff what do they think. GSoC
program is about develp yourselves. It's not about to hire the most
experiences hackers. It's about students. You have a right to not know
everything. You have a right to ask. And the most important, you have
a right to learn. And this is a goal.

As you have already known, there are listed ideas at
http://www.umitproject.org/?active=gsoc&mode=ideas
As it's called - they are just ideas. It doesn't mean that you can't
come up with *your own idea* or modify the existing ones. Personally,
my GSoC projects for Umit was my own ideas and they were warmly
greeted by the Umit community. I know others who did the same.

Usually, student does one project for 3 months. However, there were
exceptions in the past and there were students who did many small
projects/tasks or 2 semi big projects. It's OK. The most important is
how much valuable it will be for the Umit Project.

The deadline for student's applications is 8th of April. DO NOT wait
till the last minute. I know cases about missing the deadline for
various reasons (e.g. local network was down).
The most important advantage to send application as soon as possible
is...we can review it, give comments and tune it together. So your
application will be more solid and your chances will grow. Trust me,
this is important to share application with us before the deadline.
You can catch us here on the list, via private emails, IRC or by
applying already prepared application.

If you like more than 1 idea - it's fine to apply for 2 independent
project. Your chances will grow. There were some cases in the past
like student A applied for 2 ideas, and student B for one which
collided with one of the student A's ideas. We could simply select
both students without collision. So, don't worry. It's really ok to
apply for more than one project. It's even better for us!

Ok, I hope it's enough. Now, I would like to share with some ideas
which might me interesting for you and Umit. Keep in mind some of them
can be a part of already listed ideas. I just want to list some
inspirations.

1) prepare Umit to be run as a daemon;

2) rebuild Umit Web to use the Umit service; (depends on idea 1)

3) prepare iOS/Android frontends for the Umit service; (depends on
idea 1) -- it's not the same as "Network Scanner and Network Inventory
for Mobile Devices" !!

4) write GUI for Kismet and integrate it to our project

5) write GUI for WEP/WPA hacking tools such as AirCrack etc.

6) write MAC multispoofer with GUI and some hacks; i wrote it for my
Master Thesis but there is a lot of todo, if someone interested in
details - ping me

7) hack on UMPA (this is our library for building/sniffing/sending
packets) - there is a lot of to do. implementing protocols (there is
still a lack of them but this task is quite easy and fun), adding
extensions, integrating with Packet Manipulator (the goal is to use it
as a primary backend)

And this is what came to my mind in last one hour. I'm sure there is a
lot more fun stuff to hack.

Think about it. Ask about it. Let's talk about.

Have a nice hacking!

bart.
