(Those of you on unattended-cvs already know some of this.)

Things are going well. Or they were until this afternoon...

We (that is, Shad and I) have install.pl running under Linux. It
invokes Parted to partition the drive without rebooting. It lets you
type your passwords without having them echo. Basically, lots of good
stuff.

I have (uncommitted) Perl code which replaces the MBR, and that works,
too. I was hoping to make a release with the Linux-based boot disk
this weekend.

But I have hit a snag.

  http://groups.google.com/groups?threadm=1203w-8us-5%40gated-at.bofh.it

The problem is that the 2.6 Linux kernel does not know the BIOS disk
geometry. Without that geometry, it is impossible to partition and
format the drive in a way which will let Windows boot.

I do have one idea:

I hope it pans out, because it's really my only idea. But it requires
some pretty low-level hacking on the x86 which I really do not know
how to do. I can just talk the talk, more or less.

Hm. I can make it work if you already have a correct partition table,
and I suppose that will usually be the case except on brand-new hard
drives, so perhaps this is not a stop-ship problem after all.
