don't know if this has been brought up before, but the following happened to
me yesterday:
standard config on the compaq evo's i've received (donated stuff) was that
the translation mode was set to 'bit shift'...
now, since linux doesnt use bios settings for drive parameters (iirc), it
seems to be using LBA translation (why do i think this?see below)
all files copied to disk, reboot => NTLDR not found (grrrrrrr, kill bash
splatter ^$%^*)
then i changed the translation mode to LBA assisted (dont know why it came
to my mind suddenly to try and look for that kind of drive parameters, but
hey, sometimes you just dont ask difficult questions..) and *poof* , there
came the famous 'choose what os you want to start ("previous installed os on
C:" or "windows install/upgrade") '
maybe this could help installing on other machines too... just as temp fix
until the alternative installer is finished
just thought i'd share my experience, you know, like "hello all, my name is
Bob and i've been drinking now for 42 years, and..." :)
