There was a thread started on 2008-10-09 about this topic. Look for the thread called "The compile/buid system. Any suggestions?" Apparently once you get your environment tweaked just right, it works. Personally, I haven't got the build system working yet on Debian Lenny either. Does anyone know the direction of the build system?
