It's kinda old, but this web page has some details about how to do that. I
haven't needed to edit the initrd in several years myself.

[Unattended] Question
Does anyone have instructions on how to rebuild the initrd file? I need
to update the drivers for the Broadcom and of course don’t know all that
is required to recompile that file so I can get my PXE to boot for the
newer style servers. What tools are required to update it as well.
