Hello to all. I have successfully wasted an entire day trying to figure out
exactly how XP takes to hotfixes. I have always run Windows Update to patch
my machines, so I will have to plead ignorance here.

Do I have to install hotfixes in any particular order? On my Windows 2000
unattended installation I did not pay any attention to the order that my
hotfixes ran, but then again I did (for the most part) populate the proper
directory and use the script that was included with the 2.7a release to
install the patches. Now for my XP installation I also used the scripts
that were included, but removed from the list those that did not need to be
installed as a result of my sp4 slipstreamed installation. When I run
windows update from these machines to verify all critical updates were
installed, everything checks out as planned.

On the XP machine however I am left with error upon error when installing.
The todo.pl script will stop, I will cancel it (CTRL-C) and then run todo.pl
--go to restart it. Now in doing this I marked down every hotfix that
failed, then removed those from the script and placed them in a new script
entitled winxpsp1-updates2.bat. I then ran todo.pl again after rebooting
and tried to finish the install with those next hotfixes. For those that
feedback errors I removed them from the second script and added them to a
third entitled winxpsp1-updates3.bat. I then rebooted a third time. Ran
todo.pl again with the third set of hot fixes and they all errored out.
What is strange here is that when I run windows update it shows that 16
hotfixes need to be installed on one of the machines (am am testing this on
two identical builds), but on the other windows update shows that I only
need 12 updates.

Is there some documentation that is a must read for doing this sort of
thing? Please point me in the right direction. This is frustrating. As a
side in the winxpsp1-updates.bat script that came with the 2.7a release, I
did remove the .reboot directives from all of the hotfixes. I did not
understand why they were there and why I would have to reboot after so many
of the hotfixes. Any explanation for this?

Thanks.

-Michael
