I am running Exchange 5.5 on a NT 4.0 Server. The command line utility that
comes with Exchange 5.5 works as descried in the article you have linked to
below. I have been using this method for some time now. The problem is
that I can only backup to a tape drive. The command line switch in question
here is:

/tape:

If I use the following command, with the "/tape" modifier:

ntbackup backup ds EXMAIL is EXMAIL /t normal /l c:\exBak.log /tape:[0-9]

The 0-9 part should be replaced with a number between 0 and 9 that
corresponds to the tape device you are writing to. There is no way to
backup to a file. You can only backup to tape. So what I am looking for is
some sort of virtual device driver that looks like a tape drive to NT4, but
writes to a file on the local disk (or anywhere for that matter).

I have used NTBackup (aka. "Windows Backup") to dump Exchange 2000 to a flat
file. Does this not work with Exchange 5.5?

You might have to do it from the command line:
