I am looking for an easy way to push an install to numerous Windows computers with wpkg. I actually have multiple software packages I would like to do this with eventually, and most do not have /unattended style switches available.
I worked with AutoIt for a day or two. It might be a last resort option primarily because it is an awful lot of work compared to some other possibilities I have seen.
I have also tried out WinInstallLE and InstallRite repackagers. The first builds MSI snapshot files, the second builds snapshot files wrapped into an exe. Each are giving me issues & errors on numerous fronts.
What repackagers do other people use? Are there any automated solutions other than GUI scripting or snapshot repackagers? Ideas welcome.
This is my approach:
1) search Unattended mailing list for silent installation of given software
2) search google for silent installation of given software / msi packages of given software
3) try WininstallLE
4) try if pure copying files is enough for a given software to work (that is, installing software on one machine, then copying it to another machine to check if it would work)
5) asking forums / groups of given software if there are any "silent" switches to install that program
6) sending email to the developer - if the software is open source, sometimes they add this feature if you ask nicely - don't expect it always though
7) if you paid for software and are entitled to support from the producer - ask for it
8) AutoIt
And there is an opinion that administering Windows is easier than Linux! :)
One day I realized I'm spending most of my time trying to find out how to silently install some applications on Windows.
