We use reschange.exe in our Environment. It is a nobrainer. It can change your resolution regardless of your hardware. It checks what is supported and applies that. Just use "max" for the params. It changes resolution, frequency and colordepth. There is also a commandline-only tool that can list all supported resolutions. It is free under 12noon.com

I use a little utility called QRes (I think?) to change the resolution after windows is installed (that is, I run it in Unattended scripts).
