I got my IBM t43p's working the other day. How I worked around this problem?
I downloaded the latest DOS unattended boot CD. It works unlike the Linux boot CD! So for now I will use the DOS boot CD for my new t43p's and my linux boot for everything else. We bought two new T43p and see the same ntdlr-missing error. My Knowledge about the problem: I updated the linux-kernel to 2.6.11 and there is no difference. The notebooks continues to install until the reboot and the ntldr-missing error shows up. So i do think the problem is directly related to the Changes IBM/Lenovo did in this hardware. The only solution i know about is to put the harddisk into another thinkpad. There you can install the first steps and put the harddisk back. This harddisk now boots without the smallest problem. no error, no ntldr-missing... funny. i also tried to get the bootloader with bootpart on the disk, but this also failed. My second try using the recovery console from the xp-cd let me access the partition, fix-mbr and fix-boot reported ok, but they also didn't install ntldr correctly. Something strange: i was able to install xp from cd, there was no ntldr-missing error. we also use dell presision M70 notebook which uses exactly the same intel chipset, the main difference is the nvidia graphicchip. i can install the dells without problems. the harddisk is the same and the controller is the same... so i think IBM/Lenovo did something really evil. Hope there is a solution.
