I also had a problems with SATA drives, but with the new linuxboot cd it

Have you tried to change the SATA-Mode in BIOS? I had the same problem 
with Fujitsu LiveBooks and linux-boot and solved it by disabling 
"AHCI Configuration" in BIOS. See also my thread from 09/08/2005.
