I have been using unattended installs since NT 4.0 and find it the best
way to deploy computers. I only wish I had found this site/list when we
were getting started.
My problem:
I have an old building (school) with three foot thick concrete walls and
floors that I need to get network access to. Most of the rooms in the
building are wired (1st,2nd, and 4th floors), but there is an entire
floor that has no network infrastructure. I have two options: 1.) Spend
close to 100k wiring the entire floor for one computer in each
classroom. 2.) Use Orinoco/Proxim AP-2000 54g access points to connect
the stations via wireless.
I will go with the wireless if I can continue an unattended setup for
these classroom computers. The wireless coverage will be overlaping and
there will be strong signals to every room. Is there a way using the
Linux boot disc that I can unattend these computers over a secured (WPA2)
wireless connection? The network cards will be Dell (Broadcom) 1300 WLAN
Mini-PCI integrated laptop cards and Orinoco 8482 a/b/g PCI Gold cards.
Do these network cards support PXE? If not you'll still need a
CD/floppy boot.
Do these network cards have Linux support? Most wireless cards don't.
Even if they do you'll have to roll your own Linux boot floppy to get
the connection up.
I would assume the Linux boot disc is the way to startout, then applying
a 2003 Group Policy durning the start of the unattended to apply the
correct security settings for XP. Has anyone done this?
Wrong, the first step is getting the network up during the initial
graphical install, or at least during the first boot after install.
There will be no domain and no Group policies until the network is up.
I'd recommend you investigate the possibility of using wireless bridging
instead. That way the computers use their normal network cards, which
are easy to get to work, while the bridges handle the wireless security.
