That's my experience with Vmware 5 and XP, too.
However, in the old times of the DOS bootdisk this behaviour was caused by
a missing smartdrv (Disk cache). Maybe the disk caching is very bad in the
(host)-vmware-linux-dosemu-winxp combo? Lots of systems are involved here
