I looked into this and it is a fairly complicated problem. The main problem is with the packages themselves. Not all developers make it easy (or even possible) to check to see if a previous version of the package exists. You then have to remove the old version (or upgrade) and install the new version. Finally, there is versioning to contend with. Some packages may only detect some older versions and not all of them. I think your best bet is to stick with one system for package deployment and maintenance. Those being said, if you find a solution to this problem, please share it!
