There's no reason why you can't use RIS as a launchingpad for your Unattended deployment. This eliminates the requirement to setup a separate DHCP, PXE and TFTP server.  In fact, I've been doing it for several years now.  With a little help from Argon's RIS Menu Editor (RISme),   I use RIS to load the Unattended Linux boot image file.  I modify the pxelinux.cfg/default  so that it loads the  Unattended Linux kernel and initrd image files.  The unattended share can reside on Linux (Samba) or any Windows server.

Visit the link below  for pointers of what you need to do.

Tip: When customizing your RIS server using RISme, you should always place your additions in the Troubleshooting and Maintenance section.

You can download a free trial version of RISme for the Argon website

Is it a good idea to have Unattended and RIS working side by side?  I can elaborate.

I realize that the two solutions are redundant in many ways, but with such difficulty supporting SATA controllers for use with Unattended I need to see if I can get by any easier with RIS.  The problems could be even worse I suppose with RIS, but I just need to see it with my own eyes.

In the end I'd like to leave both solutions running because I'm weary about legacy XP support.  Since only half of my boxes are "Vista capable" I know I'll be stuck with XP for years to come.  If I have enough boxes and space I'll leave one machine with Unattended and one machine with RIS to satisfy any XP redeploys that come up.

So now my questions get specific.

Can Unattended and RIS both use the same DHCP?  (I'm wondering if I have DHCP running on the Unattended box, will that same DHCP also support a second box with RIS?  Neither machine is on my company LAN.  I've just been running Unattended in a private network to minimize DHCP issues and keep the deployment traffic off of the LAN.)

Here's the most interesting question for me, can Unattended and RIS run simultaneously on the same box?
