I have used syslinux and it boots and works on PATA disks.
However, theres some logic missing when used on SATA systems.
(at least this was a problem some months ago, and after a quick look at the 
current CVS, I belive the problem still is there)
As I remember the master/install.pl scripts is confused with the drives and 
partitions so parted will run against the wrong disk: namely youre USB thumb 
drive!
Again from my fuzzy memory: This is beacause it sees the thumb drive first and 
belive this is the right drive to do work on.
