This behaviour could also just be a result of using a virtual PC; this could just be a performance issue. If you're using 'full' virtualization (e.g. VMware server), there will always be some problems with timing and performance. If you can switch to hardware virtualization (e.g. XenServer or Xen in RHEL/CentOS running on an Intel or AMD chip with paravirtualization support, these problems should cease.
