The section_name_1 would be the path to the folder containing the 
files. I'm assuming that would be the path to the files AFTER they've 
been copied to the workstation - [\path\to\i386\]

Windows generates the short filename, theoreticaly according to 
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/142982. In practice I found that my 
files weren't renamed according to that. When the install stopped when 
it couldn't find the file, I browsed to the folder where the file had 
been copied to and got the shortfilename from there.

I don't think you have to rename the file in your original source. 
However, you might be able to rename the file in your source and use 
the $$Rename.txt file to convert that back to the proper long name.
