Hi all,

Firstly, thanks for a fantastic bit of software - I can obviously see
great uses for this.

I am hoping that someone can help me with a problem I am having. I
have 2 x VMware machines defined - the "server" (aka ntinstall)
running RHEL ES 4.5 (with stock SAMBA) and the "client" a generic
workstation configured to network boot via PXE.

I have followed the step-by-step instructions on the unattended web
site and so far so good.

I can PXE boot the client and there are NO problems until Windows XP
SP2 setup. After the initial copy of files (including ntldr) it hangs
for an inordinate length of time at the "Please wait while Setup
copies files to your hard disk." screen. Under VMware, there doesn't
appear to be any hard disk or network activity, and with "log level =
2" set in the SAMBA config, I'm not seeing anything untowards in the
SAMBA logs.

After 10-15 minutes, it gets past this screen and starts copying
files. Often it will complain about being unable to copy a file
(Source was a retail Windows XP SP2 CD - i386 dir which installs from
the CD OK), pressing Escape will continue and usually (but not always)
the remainder of Setup will continue just fine.

I've done a bit of sniffing around the mailing lists, the FAQ and
Google and have found many references to Smartdrv and possibly the
length of the path. I've ensured the install directory (aka
\\ntinstall\install) is very short (less than 64 characters?) so my
question is about Smartdrv and possibly VMware.

I know that there is a known issue with Windows XP and Smartdrv often
being required otherwise the install is painfully slow/giving file
copying errors - which is what is happening.

My questions are:

1. Is Smartdrv definitely being loaded if I am PXE booting (as opposed
to a DOS or Linux boot disk) and using Unattended 4.7 as documented?
2. Are there any known issues with the above scenario under VMware? If
so, or this is suspected, I will have to replicate this on a couple of
PCs.

Any pointers or help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Andrew.
