Ok, "sudo make test" in pythonmod/ now works. I removed all modules except for "python". I ran "./configure --with-pythonmodule" Checked config.h that WITH_PYTHONMODULE was defined to 1 ran make clean make sudo checkinstall (debian-style make install).
and now it seems to work.
