I think we all see it...but I really do believe there is hope. With the model Ellin is setting up for us...teaching for understanding...I think kids might begin to see and feel the joy that comes from intellectual engagement. I know how I feel as I tackle the ideas in this book...I know many of us feel the same way as we discuss in book groups or read professionally. What has been missing (I know it has been missing for me) was conveying that enthusiasm...that joy that comes from the struggle to our kiddos. I believe we can get there...but no one ever said it would be easy! Jennifer In a message dated 3/25/2008 11:36:46 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
am seeing this lack of reading at all levels as well. I have a concern that some teachers, new and experienced, are?relying on technology to do the teaching.?And not just watching movies, but putting kids in front of computer screens too often. The wide reading that we know is necessary to develop deeper comprehension, not to mention vocabulary knowledge, seem to be squeezed out of the daily schedule more and more.
