I asked my students today what "making sense" means? The first response was it
means to understand. So naturally, I asked what "to understand" means?! They
started off saying it means you know what the author or characters are trying
to tell you. One student said you know what the word is, and another said it
doesn't matter if you know the word--you need to know what it means. Another
student said the words need to make a story.

However, what I thought to be the best response of all was "when you feel it".
As we expanded on that statement the kids discussed how you having feelings
like laughter or being sad and then you understand the story. Wow! At the end
of our independent reading time each child shared what his/her feeling or
emotion was while they read. What an amazing activity!!
