After reading Jennifer's post, I took another look at the Outcomes of
Understanding and marked the ones I felt I was experiencing while reading the
chapter. While I think I experienced all the ones that Jennifer mentioned, I
also marked "confidence" and "a desire to advocate" and "a sense of cause and
effect." To start to answer Jennifer's question about do certain learning
styles result in certain outcomes above others, I would say yes. Whenever I
learn something new, my immediate reaction is to tell someone about it, to talk
about it, to share it in some way. I think this is why I marked "confidence" -
and I think I would probably mark that no matter what the subject matter. I
think that is just how I learn.
As for the "sense of cause of effect" outcome, it's an odd thing that I do when
I read, but I ALWAYS notice cause and effect. I did here in this chapter, too,
because I remember thinking, "Oh, I get it. If you TELL the students these
outcomes exist and talk about them, THEN they will start to do them!" Cause
and effect, right? But, again, this must just be part of my learning style
because I notice myself thinking like that all the time. I'm curious to hear
if everyone else thinks maybe Jennifer is correct about the correlation between
learning style and outcome.
And would Ellin argue that the goal is for EVERY learner to experience all the
outcomes at certain times if they are truly understanding, regardless of
learning style?

As far as the dimensions.... yes, Jennifer, I notice all of these happening as
I read this book. And I noticed them after attending a wonderful workshop on
Friday with Nancy Atwell - and because of Ellin's book, I knew I was
UNDERSTANDING.
Interestingly, I was also thinking about the lack of these dimensions showing
when I'm not understanding. I just finished a School Law class and throughout
it, there was no fervency (is that a word?), no dwelling, no emotional
connections. Quite the opposite of what has happened in all of my other
classes. But is it because I didn't understand? Or is it because I didn't
care? Or are those two one and the same?

Thanks for your post, Jennifer... very thought provoking!

 Anyway-- I
would be interested in hearing whether or not listserv members are getting
different outcomes of understanding and seeing if we can get at whether or not
it is strategies or learning styles or background knowledge that might trigger
different outcomes of understanding in different people.

As for 2.2b...what happens in our lives...
I was wondering if anyone else seems to be finding that so many of these are
in play right now for you as you are reading posts on this listserv and
revisiting this chapter.
