Jennifer, Thank you for your post! I love how you changed the lesson. I just did that book and wish I had done it that way. A fellow teacher is doing the book and she is having problems. She is working with low students too, so it is impressive that your students were able to do it. I liked the way you said you grouped and had them discuss. When you said group chart, was it a whole group chart or each group had their own? I often have them write on large sticky notes and stick it on. I am curious how you do it.
