Hi everyone, I have been too busy to reread Chapter 5, but wanted to respond to Catherine. I think you are right on! Bonita sent me an Art book connection and has me thinking. I agree with you Catherine that we need to let kids ponder. Art would be a great choice and I will spend some time this summer developing it. You were so right when you said, kids take tests in 20 minutes. That is what we are doing to education. I love Ellin's think time. I watched her do it in Open Forum, and all kids definately do better with more think time before answering.
Linda B Catherine wrote: I think they had the "let's just get it done ASAP" frame of mind. If we teach them how to ponder in the moment and let them struggle with their thoughts, wouldn't they transfer this into other areas? I still believe we have something going with this art connection. This summer I want to revisit "Picture Learning" and "A Teacher's Sketch Journal" by Karen Ernst. We also dabbled in Nature Journals. Our fundamental goal wasn't to teach them art. It was to get them to slow down and take notice. _______________________________________________ Understand mailing list [email protected] http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/listinfo/understand_literacyworkshop.org
