I finally have time to catch up with posts.

IMO, you have done them a tremendous favor! They will remember what  
it is like. Perhaps next year, they will not be so docile and just  
"take the traditional" approach. Maybe one of them will start  
thinking about the book they are required to read and challenge the  
teacher.

We can never afford to have teachers like you who care so  
passionately wonder if they should give up!
Keep on doing it. If you can, look for a district that values what  
you do so well.
