Ellin, Thank you for your thoughts. I have been reading this discussion and it really had me thinking. I also thought back to your presentation in Chicago - where I saw you have the students visualize the words. It was so impressive and I am glad you explained it here. It was something I tried with third grade students that really helped them.
I am facilitating a workshop this summer on workstations, and so many teachers are concerned about covering the content quickly so they can move on to the next topic. Teachers are overwhelmed by what they have to cover. I agree with your thoughts on teaching for longer periods so that students have a real understanding.
