BASIC ELECTION FACTS

Indonesia is gearing up to face the legislative and presidential elections this year. The first election will fill nearly 16,000 seats in the legislatures at the national, provincial and district levels.

The second election will be Indonesia's first direct presidential vote. Should no candidate meet the criteria for election in the first round of elections, a run-off between the top two vote-winners will take place.

The process needs to be completed before President Megawati Soekarnoputri's term expires on 20 October.

The official election campaigning period will commence on 11 March and end on 1 April.

Elections for the 550-seat parliament will begin on 5 April, while simultaneous polls for local legislative bodies will be held. Under electoral reforms agreed earlier, the Indonesian Military and National Police will be losing their 38 appointed seats.

On 28 April, an announcement of parliamentary election results is scheduled, which is expected to greatly influence the line-up of candidates and coalitions for Indonesia's first presidential election.

In the next two days, parliament seats for political parties shall be allocated.

Between 1 May and 7 May, political parties will register their chosen pair of candidates, which spell out the party alliances for the presidential election. All candidates must be nominated by a coalition or a political party that wins at least 5 percent of votes in the parliamentary election or 3 percent of seats in the House of Representatives (DPR).

The names of presidential and vice presidential candidates will be announced on 19 May.

Campaigning for the presidential elections will then be held from 1 June till 1 July, followed by the presidential election on 5 July.

Announcements of results of presidential elections will be made on 20 July. Should no pair of candidates win more than 50 percent of national votes, and at least 20 percent of votes in at least 16 provinces, a second round will be held between the two top vote-winners.

Dates allocated for the second round of the presidential election campaigning period are from 14 September to 16 September. The election itself will take place on 20 September, and announcement of results will take place on 5 October.

The inauguration ceremony of the new president and vice president is scheduled for 20 October.
