Those grey (or gray, or whatever) squares.... らららららららら .... Aren't those
just for unassigned characters? You see, this was designed by computer people, who
just LOVE multiples of 16. So if you look at the chart for hiragana, you see that they
left space for four new kana, just in case somebody decided to invent new kana. But
what with that ヴ kana and all, you never know... I think they're
1. to make the columns come out even
and
2. in case someone comes up with new letters
