A ligature is a special presentation form of a string where the letters connect in some fashion. Some digraphs have been directly encoded in Unicode. Many consider that such direct encoding of strings was an error. Some people consider some ligatures to be distinct characters (in the dictionary sense of the word). In some alphabets, some digraphs are considered to be distict letters. Spanish considers the string "ll" to be a distinct letter. It remains, however, only a string. Best regards, James Kass.
