What is the correct IPA symbol for the "g" sound in "gig"? Is it U+0067 LATIN SMALL LETTER G [g], or U+0261 LATIN SMALL LETTER SCRIPT G [ɡ]?
The references I have seen are about evenly split between U+0067 and U+0261. Even the official and semi-official IPA Web sites at the Universities of Glasgow and Victoria show both, depending on which of their pages you look at, which is disappointing. I have learned not to trust the amateur IPA pages, as they tend to have blatantly wrong listings like U+0131 LATIN SMALL LETTER DOTLESS I [ı] for the "i" sound in "gig." It seems obvious to me that it should be U+0261, but I'm looking for a voice of authority to confirm this. -Doug Ewell Fullerton, California
