Ted, AppleWorks 6.2.4 does not allow Unicode input, unfortunately. I tried writing mult, umesc and romnes,te in TextEdit and saved as .rtf in a number of encodings and when AppleWorks imports them it strips the Romanian s, and t, out and, oddly, changes the font to Zapf Chancery.

You can type Romanian with TextEdit by choosing the U.S. Extended keyboard in the keyboard menu (System Preferences > International > Input Menu); option-p + s/t gives you the letter with comma below. If you have Romanian hardware, you can choose the Romanian keyboard in the Input Menu, which has s, on the key and t, on the \ key. I filed a bug with Apple some time ago about the Unicode support in AppleWorks, but these things take time sometimes.
