Do the characters actually get converted to underscore characters or do they
simply get displayed with an underscore glyph?
They get converted.
Input and rendering, however, are limited to legacy
codepages supported by the Mac OS. Thus, e.g. you should be able to work
with Chinese text (at least some Chinese characters), but you wouldn't
be able to work with Ethiopic text.
In the MS Windows version of Word it has long been possible to write macros to
input Unicode characters using VBA. Doesn't this work on the Mac version?
I never tried it, but I'm doubtful. The problem here is that Word on the Mac currently forces documents to contain no Unicode characters which cannot be displayed with QuickDraw text.
