Is your dislike shared by Mongolian encoding specialists, or the other users of variation selectors you hint at? Is there a significant body of happy users of Mongolian encodings that use free variation selectors - Unicode or otherwise? (I gather from the Unicode Standard that legacy encodings of Mongolian also have mechanisms similar to Unicode's free variation selectors.) Respectfully, Dean A.
