Very early square script actually shows up first in 495 B.C. in Egypt, on Elephantine (El-Fil) Island [near Aswan] in personal letters, legal contracts, marriage contracts, and other fascinating material written by a community of Jewish soldiers and their families. They had been posted to the farthest reaches of the Persian Empire. It was used for Aramaic there....
The Elephantine material is in museums in Brooklyn and elsewhere....Elaine
