I just saw the following posting on the Ancient Near Eastern email list. Interesting in light of the Phoenician and Archaic Greek discussions here, no?
Notice the striking non-use of the term "Phoenician" in the conference title, using "West Semitic" instead. Maybe we should wait to see what comes out of this conference. I wish I could attend. ***************************************** Conference: ALPHABETIC RESPONSES TO WESTERN SEMITIC WRITING A conference on the development and use of alphabetic Greek and other writing systems in the Early Iron Age Mediterranean. 1st to 3rd July 2004, at St. Hilda's College Oxford.
