Dear Tulasi, May be I could explain this somewhat. The Unicode Consortium is a non-profit organization, The purpose of the Unicode Consortium is to produce standards for use by the ICT industry (where a very large number of individual companies clearly operate for profit). These standards cover character encoding and related subjects (e.g., ordering), done in co-operation with the subcommittee SC2 of the Joint Technical Committee 1 of the international formal standardization organizations ISO and IEC. The Unicode Consortium has also assumed the responsibility to develop and maintain the Common Locale Data Repository, which is used by a very large number of IT companies to localize their products.
There are several levels of members in the Unicode Consortium (which is reflected in the size of the membership fees). In addition to the corporate and organization members there are also individual members, of which I am one. Sincerely, Erkki I. Kolehmainen Tilkankatu 12 A 3, FI-00300 Helsinki, Finland Puh. My posting was based on http://www.unicode.org/consortium/directors.html where in the bottom it said Unicode Inc. Looks like the elected members from consortium http://www.unicode.org/consortium/consort.html forms Unicode Inc. Am I correct? In this link http://www.unicode.org/consortium/consort.html it looks like less than 100 members in the consortium. How many members currently do you have who can vote to elect? Link http://www.unicode.org/consortium/consort.html says Unicode consortium is non-profit organization. Recently I have purchased Windows 7 from Microsoft Corporation This product has Unicode fonts for number of language. But Microsoft Corporation is for profit. So it looks like Unicode Inc is for profit through its elected officials, but Unicode consortium is non-profit. Am I correct? I still do not understand: What is the role of this Director exactly? The consortium is constituted according to its bylaws: http://unicode.org/consortium/unicode-bylaws.html Roughly, it is constituted by its membership: http://www.unicode.org/consortium/memblogo.html, which elects the directors yearly. The officers report to the directors, and are responsible for the running of the consortium. The technical work is delegated to the technical committees, which operate according to their procedures. The background of the officers and directors can be found on http://www.unicode.org/consortium/directors.html. For a historical view, see http://www.unicode.org/history/boardmembers.html. Also it looks like Unicode Incorporate has one director to represent whole Asia, while Asia has more languages than any continent. What is the role of this Director exactly? Respectfully, Tulasi
