Sorry, but I forgot to mention that my experience was in Switzerland,
in the late 1960ies. Actually, given that the education system in
Switzerland is handled by the Cantons, I should say that it was in the
Canton of Zurich.
In the case of my informant: Lower Saxony and North Rhine–Westphalia,
exactly your generation. I'm pretty sure that they don't teach the
distinction in Germany anymore, or /if/ they do at most locally and at
the elementary school level, because otherwise I would have noticed.
