Taybin> Shouldn't 3("a"|"b"|"c"|"d") work as well?

Nope, you are confusing it with 3("a","b","c","d").

But your question points out a subtlety: in real life the expressions
may be more interesting than "a"... if the expressions in between the
vertical bars can fail, or produce multiple results for that matter,
grabbing the 3rd result from a batch may not grab the result from the
expression in the 3rd position. 3( , , , ) requires all expressions
to succeed and grabs a result from the expression at a particular
(in this case, the third) textual position in the source code. The
examples I gave grab the third result from a generator, in whichever
subexpression it happens to occur.
