Thanks for those replies.
The $TZ environment variable doesn't seem to be portable
across unix systems. On my machines here in the UK, I got
the following :-
AIX : GMT0BST
Solaris : GB
Linux : unset
However, the output of the command "date +%Z" was the same
on all three systems ("GMT"), so Taybin's suggestion is
portable across at least these 3 Unix systems.
But I don't have any method at all on Windows.
